Jesus Goes on the Bull Riding Circuit

1/15/07

Group mixes rodeos, evangelism

By Bronislaus B. Kush TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER - Fans of professional bull riding have come to appreciate the thrills and spills that the growing sport offers.

Very soon, many of those attending events on the circuit, such as last weekend's "Worcester Classic" at the DCU Center, will also be able to get a dollop of Jesus mixed in with the bucks, kicks and body rolls featured at the shows.

That's because the Professional Bull Riders Inc., which organizes competitions such as the one held here, has entered into an arrangement with International Men's Network - a Dallas-based evangelical outreach ministry - to offer seminars, talks and worship services geared toward making male ticket holders "better family men."

"Our organization is about helping guys become better men," said John King, IMN's founder and president. "The Professional Bull Riders, meanwhile, saw a need to reach out to its members and fans with the type of ministry that we offer. It's a win-win situation for both groups."

Professional bull riding is one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the country and a number of associations sponsor meets.

PBR events alone drew about 1.5 million attendees last year. It's also estimated that 100 million viewers in 2006 tuned into competitions broadcast by FOX, NBC and other networks.

In Worcester, every PBR event has sold out since the association first came to the city 10 years ago.

"When the bull riders first came to Worcester, we didn't know what to expect," said John LaHair, DCU's marketing director. "But every show was sold out. We're talking about 10,000 people per show, from all walks of life."

Mr. King said he was approached by Randy Bernard, the PBR's chief executive officer, about providing an out-reach to his riders, who are often away from their families for several weeks, as well as to fans.

Under the plan, the IMN, which was founded by the Australian-born Mr. King in 2000, would be offered use of selected PBR venues to offer men seminars, talks and possibly some type of worship service.

The men would attend the sessions, then enjoy the bull-riding event.

"There are a number of issues, like pornography, that affect men from all over the world," explained Mr. King, noting the programs would be attractive to men of all Christian denominations. "We'd help them avoid the pitfalls that can destroy a marriage and the family."

He said IMN officials would work with local church leaders in setting up the programs at PBR events.

Mr. King, author of "It's a Guy Thing: Helping Guys Become Men, Husbands, and Fathers," said both sides are still working on the plan and he hopes the PBR ministry could be launched by later this year.

"These men (bull riders) have not only won the hearts of millions through their athleticism and courage but also through their willingness to express their genuine love and commitment to Jesus," said Todd Pierce of the PBR, who is the liaison to the IMN. "By unifying our efforts with John King, we will be able to more effectively disciple our athletes, while also reaching hundreds of fans."

PBR officials said the ministry is especially important because their members spend weeks on the road.

"There is a lot of travel," said Jody Newberry, a 26-year-old rider from Ada, Okla.

Mr. Newberry said this is his fifth year on the circuit and he believes he will retire from the sport in a couple of years.

According to Jodie Edmonds, PBR's marketing manager, association riders must be at least 18 and most quit when they're in their late 30s or early 40s.

"I've known since I was a kid that I wanted to be a rider but there is a lot of wear and tear, so this is something you don't do all your life," said Mr. Newberry, who plans to sell fuel additives when he retires.

Mr. Newberry, who picked up bull riding from his father, said he's been fortunate that his wife, Amanda, and his 17-month-old son, Trevor, have been able to accompany him recently on the circuit.

Mrs. Newberry is finishing her master's degree in speech language pathology and has been on Christmas break.

"It's great to be with him but I'll be heading back home soon," said Mrs. Newberry, noting the couple's 8-year-old daughter, Shaylea, stayed with grandparents on this trip East.

Phenix & Phenix to Publicize Guy Thing

9/5/06

Phoenix & Phoenix, a well know publicist and promotional organization, would like to do a nation-wide campaign for Guy Thing.

Their aim is to bring nation-wide attention to the book and get the "message and the man out there".

They work with organizations and outlets like USA Today, Good Morning America, Larry King, and CNN. Mostly secular and non-Christian organizations. Which I think is great. The appeal of Guy Thing is to a great audience - men in need everywhere!

when asked about their previous clients and they said:

We have handled such a wealth of high-profile ministries during our history (from John Hagee to John Maxwell to Stormie Omartian to Vicki Courtney to Stephen Baldwin to Ed Young), along with campaigns from major Christian publishing houses (Harvest House, Zondervan, Baker Publishing Group, Thomas Nelson, B&H Publishing Group, WaterBrook Press and a few others all have active accounts with us), we do have great contacts at most Christian media outlets.

The thought is that once we can build a platform with this organization we have a vehicle to be a force for the Kingdom within the church and the community.

Huge Catalogue Push for It's a Guy Thing

8/25/06

Destiny Image has asked me if i would like them to do a special catalogue featuring It's a Guy Thing. They will give me the front cover for a full write up on the book and about how the men's ministry torch was passed to Beccy and I by Dr. Ed Cole's board.

They will also give me an inside front cover and two more pages to promote all of the resources available to men that we have at International Mens Network.

This mail out will go out to their 60,000 people mailing list and then to the people on our mailing list. Initially about 10,000 and then another 50,000 and then the final 90,000. That is a mailing out to some 310,000 people!

Now you all need to buy books next week from the IMN store. if you buy it in the month of September I will personally sign them and even personalize them if you want to give them as a gift to someone!
